Choose your pet wisely
If you are thinking about adopting or buying a dog perhaps you need to take a look at what would be the best breed of dog for you and your family. There is a lot of information out there and the American Kennel Club recognizes over 150 breeds. They are divided into seven groups. Your best bet is to find out about the characteristics and history of the different dogs. Animal Planet has information and photos of all the breeds. There are also body basics and life stages.

A friend of mine lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and she has a great blog about lots of interesting things that go on in that part of the US. Following is information about their yearly sled dog race. Follow her blog as she tells us the story, in pictures, of these magnificent dogs. She writes: This is such a fun time for us in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and something I look forward to every year. Mushers from around the U.S. and as far away as New Zealand participated in the race this year. Thirty-three dog sled teams!! This is the 20th year we have had the privilege of having dog sled races here.
Sniffer dog Treo given top honour
Published 25 Feb 2010 in Rutland Times
A LIFE-SAVING dog has been awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross for his bravery while serving in Afghanistan. Retired nine-year-old black Labrador Treo, who has now returned back to his former unit at St George's Barracks, in Pennine Way, North Luffenham, received the Dickin Medal on Wednesday.
The heroic dog was presented with the medal for sniffing out bombs known as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) while working as a forward detection dog on two occasions in Sangin, Helmand Province, in March and September 2008. His detective work saved the lives of the soldiers he was patrolling with and innocent civilians.

Twilight's 'Bella' becomes most popular dog name
Fan fever for the enormously popular "Twilight" franchise has spread its way to the pet world: Bella, the name of the series' heroine, has usurped Max as the most popular dog name of 2009. Though Max held the top spot for six years in a row, this year Bella beat out Max by more than 400 dogs. But fans of the name Max need not worry, it moved to the top 2009 name in the kitty kingdom. Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's largest and oldest provider of pet health insurance, scoured its database of more than 475,000 insured pets to find the most popular dog names of 2009. (Animals not insured by VPI were not included in the survey.)

Great American Dog
Presley, a boxer born in Perry, Oklahoma, is the "Greatest American Dog." He won that title on the CBS competition series that aired in summer 2008.
Now Presley and his best friend Travis Brorsen (also born in Perry) are off on another adventure, and they are inviting everyone along for the fun.
"Adventures with Travis and Presley, Part 1" is a DVD and book set that teaches children the importance of good manners while helping Presley find his bone. The series, the first of eight, is designed for ages 2 to 6, but it is entertaining and fun for all youngsters.
Enid's own KJ Productions and The Curtoons Cartoon Company collaborated on the project to help bring it to market.
The DVD/book combo can be ordered for $9.99 at www.travisandpresley.com.
